Fish, fish and more fish in the Virgin Islands

Above is the full video of our snorkeling trip to Trunk Bay in the Virgin Islands. We saw lots and lots of different fish and other sea creatures. Some of the coral there was just massive:

There were also lots of small squid:

Closer to the beach, we also happened to see a big stingray:

And there was one interesting fish that liked to burrow in the sand and hide:

Gorgeous beach in the Virgin Islands

The famous beach at Trunk Bay in St John (US Virgin Islands) is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Amazingly blue water, great sand, and not too many people. The green surrounding landscape and all the small islands are just beautiful as you can probably tell from our video. We spent a lot of time snorkeling in the water, but it’s a great place to go if you just want to tan as well. Trunk Bay is just a short boat and bus ride away from St Thomas.

Flamingos can apparently be trained

We saw the “World Famous” Marching Flamingos at the zoo in the Bahamas. We were admiring how weird and cool the flamingos were, when they were all called in to perform in a show. It was fun watching them perform for the crowd, but my favorite part was just watching hang out. There were also other birds and animals at the Ardastra Gardens:

We got to feed parrots in the Bahamas

We went on an excursion to the Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Center in Nassau, Bahamas from a Caribbean cruise on the Norwegian Getaway. We were lucky enough to arrive in time for parrot feeding. There was a lot of interaction time where we fed apples to the lory parrots. It was a lot of fun, but don’t let them get into your hair. There was a woman there who learned that the hard way when a parrot left a ‘surprise’ on her head.

Gorgeous caves in Bermuda

The Crystal and Fantasy Caves are very beautiful. We had a great time exploring these caves in a guided tour. You can just do one of the caves if you like, but might as well see both since they are next to each other. We took a public bus, and walked to get there. You can read the detailed account here.

A walking tour of Labadee in Haiti

Labadee is a part of Haiti that is owned by Royal Caribbean. The area around Labadee is very green and lush. You can take a look at my walk around video above: I go from the cruise ship to the main beach on the left side, and then loop back to the cruise ship via the the second beach on the right side. (If you go there, you’ll understand what I mean by the left and right.) The beach area itself is quite nice; it’s definitely been engineered to accommodate a lot of cruise passengers. The beach on the right seemed to have better water if you want to go for a dip. You can read the detailed account here.

World’s longest zip line over water is in Haiti

Labadee in Haiti has the longest over-water zip line in the world: Dragon’s Breath Flight Line. It’s quite high, and you end up going quite fast. The zoom on my camera may obscure just exactly how high and long the zip line is, so here are the numbers: it is 2,600 feet long and 500 feet high. You end up reaching speeds of 40 to 50 miles per hour! You can read the detailed account here.

Zip line on a cruise ship

Royal Caribbean has outfitted some of its bigger ships with a zip line. The zip line is quite high: 9 decks high to be precise. It’s also about 80 feet long. It’s not the same as zip line for real where you have multiple legs, but as close as you’ll get on a cruise ship! You have to remember to have laced shoes with socks and your clothes can’t be wet. You can read the detailed account here.

Surfing on a cruise ship

Royal Caribbean has outfitted some of its bigger ships with simulated surfing machines. We used the FlowRider on the Oasis of the Seas (there are two aboard, one for surfing and the other for boogie boarding) and it was a lot of fun. It’s not the same as surfing for real, but as close as you’ll get on dry land (or a ship)! We’d never done this before so it was tricky. The water moves at 35 to 40 miles per hour. The surface under the water is a little bit padded, but there is a real chance of injury if you fall. You can read the detailed account here.

Amazing fish at Hanauma Bay

The snorkeling at Hanauma Bay is just incredible. You walk a few dozen feet into the water from the beach and you are surrounded by sooooo many colorful fish. There are a lot of different species, and also a lot of fish. This is one of the best places in the world to go snorkeling. You can read the detailed account here.

The most amazing place to go horseback riding

If you are of a certain generation, and remember being a child in awe when you first saw giant dinosaurs roam the big screen in swaths of greenery, well, you can relive part of that memory by going to Kualoa Ranch on Oahu. This is where those scenes were filmed and the real thing is definitely awe inspiring. If you are ever going to go horseback riding, this is THE place to go just for the views. I had an amazing time and highly recommend it. You can read the detailed account here.

The Boston aquarium even had a live shark egg with a shark embryo inside

One of the hidden gems at the New England Aquarium is the shark nursery. They had a handful of shark eggs on display with real live tiny little shark embryos inside. This particular one that I recorded on video below is an epaulette shark embryo that is 3 months old. It was set to hatch 1 month later. Thanks to the special lighting you can really see it move around and feed inside the egg. Most people walked by this display since there is so much more going around elsewhere in the aquarium.

Petting sharks and sting rays at the aquarium in Boston

The New England Aquarium has a shark and sting ray touch tank!!! I really enjoyed being able to pet these animals. There was such a huge variety of animals in that tank and there wasn’t anything to be afraid of. There was an especially large leopard whiptail stingray that kept coming back. Such a beautiful creature. You can tell from the video that I couldn’t get enough!
